Category: Comparisons
Compare the Stellar Dread AI Standard, AI Special, and Virus Standard editions to find the right sci-fi card deck for your collection or cardistry.
Quick answer
Choose the Virus Standard Edition if you want the spaceship-inspired Void tuck box with vent lines; choose the AI Special Edition for the premium Hatch Door tuck box with a working gearwheel mechanism. The AI Standard Edition offers the same Void tuck box as the Virus edition at the same price, but with different card art.
Tuck box design: the biggest visual difference
The Stellar Dread series splits into two distinct tuck box styles. Both the Virus Standard Edition and the AI Standard Edition use the Void tuck box, which mimics a spaceship's heat dissipation system with precision-engineered vent lines, foil accents, and embossing. The AI Special Edition steps up with the Hatch Door tuck box, featuring a working gearwheel that opens a hatch door to reveal the deck inside.
Price and value considerations
The Virus Standard and AI Standard editions are priced identically at USD 10.08 (catalog comparison price USD 14.00). The AI Special Edition costs USD 17.92 (catalog comparison price USD 28.00), making it nearly 80% more expensive. If you want the interactive tuck box experience, the AI Special Edition is the clear choice; if you prioritize lower cost and still want a detailed sci-fi deck, either standard edition works.
Collector Set option
For serious collectors, the Stellar Dread Collector Set (USD 48.30) bundles both special editions (AI Special and presumably the Virus equivalent) in Hatch Door tuck boxes. This set gives you the full narrative experience with the gearwheel mechanism on both decks, but at a higher upfront cost. If you only want one deck, a single edition is more practical.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Virus Standard Edition: Void tuck box with vent lines, foil, and embossing. Same price as AI Standard. Card art focuses on the 'virus' theme.
- AI Standard Edition: Same Void tuck box as Virus edition, but with AI-themed card art. Identical price. Trade-off: you choose the theme over the tuck box style. If you like the Void box but prefer AI art, pick this over Virus.
- AI Special Edition: Premium Hatch Door tuck box with interactive gearwheel mechanism. Higher price. Trade-off: you pay more for the mechanical display experience. Best for collectors who want a tuck box that does more than open.
